Oil & Gas are two of the major components of Pakistan's Energy mix contributing more than 80% to the 60.4 million TOE of energy requirement in Pakistan. The government is continuously devising attractive investment policies in order to provide a conducive and investment friendly environment to the foreign investors. As a result of these policies the Foreign Investment in this sector stands at US$ 554 million in the year 2007 - 2008.
Presently, there are 119 exploration licenses and 127 development and production leases held by various international and local exploration production companies operating in Pakistan. So far, 696 wells have been explored with 209 discoveries bringing the level of gas reserves to 31 TCF. The reserves of crude oil on the other hand, have been estimated at 339 million barrels. The current production of oil is 73,000 barrels per day, while the current production of natural gas is 4 billion cubic feet per day.
The commercial requirement of energy in the country has doubled over the last decade as the demand for energy has been increasing due to the continuous growth of the economy.
Keeping in pace with the technological advancement, Pakistan now posses a well developed and integrated infrastructure for the transportation, distribution and utilisation of natural gas with 9,916 KM of transmission and 84,000 KM of distribution network.
Pakistan is the leading consumer of CNG in the transport sector in the world. Presently, 2,068 CNG stations are operating in the country serving over 1.7 million vehicles.
